Other Conditions That Have Stress Related Symptoms

from:

There are various other medical conditions that have the same symptoms as stress. One of the conditions that mirror stress is anxiety disorder. A person may experience rapid heart rates, shallow breaths, muscle tension, and the inability to take a deep breath. Anxiety is an emotional disorder and has feelings of fear, panic, anxiety, and apprehension. Although it has some of the same symptoms of stress, anxiety is not triggered by threatening conditions or pending danger. Smells, sights, or unreasonable fears may trigger anxiety. Patients with anxiety disorder may also have physical complaints including headaches, irritable bowel syndrome, dizziness, and chest pain. A person may go to the emergency room with chest pains that feel like a heart attack, only to find out it is a stress or a panic attack. Anxiety attacks can disrupt family life, career, and social relationships.

Another condition that has many of the same symptoms as stress is depression. Depression can be caused by untreated stress. The feelings of depression are different from stress. They include loss of interest in life; sleep patterns disrupted, hopelessness, extreme sadness, and thoughts of suicide. Depression may lead to an inability to function in the every-day world. People with serious depression often need professional help to find out what is causing the problem. A trained professional will be able to decide if depression is the main problem or if the depression is caused by stress.

Another emotional condition that resembles stress is Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. PTSD is caused by a traumatic event such as sexual assault, or intense combat. Other triggers could be traumatic events that happen to a large group. Post-traumatic stress disorder has been found in survivors of major disasters such as earthquakes, hurricanes, and the terrible events of 9/11. Many citizens of the United States suffered stress like symptoms and were diagnosed with having PTSD because of the terrorist attack on our nation. More recently, PTSD has been diagnosed in those who had to leave their homes in Mississippi, Louisiana, and Alabama because of the severe hurricane season.

People try to forget the traumatic event but develop emotional numbness and even amnesia in a try to erase it from their memory. Often flashbacks occur which bring the event to the forefront, or they could experience scenes from the event in dreams. Post-traumatic stress disorder is classified as an anxiety disorder. Symptoms include hopelessness, mood swings, and irritability. Other common symptoms are sleep problems, the inability to concentrate, and lack of pleasure in events that normally give pleasure. PTSD patients may also startle easily and have an exaggerated response to noise.

Each of these conditions may need to be treated differently. You should always check with your doctor so he can help you decide if what you are battling is depression, anxiety disorders, post-traumatic stress syndrome or if it stress. Some of the symptoms of disorders other than stress can be treated with over-the-counter medicines. Stomach distress can be treated with antacids and antidiarrhea medications, and ibuprofen, and acetaminophen can be used to treat headaches.
