Acute Stress-How Can It Affect Our Body?

from:

Our brain reacts immediately to any threat by taking actions to deal with it as quickly as possible. The hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) system is started and several actions happen immediately. Stress hormones are released including the cortisol stress hormone. This hormone gathers all the defenses in the body to prepare for an attack. The brain, circulation, immune systems, skin, and metabolism systems prepare their part of the body for a pending attack.

Neurotransmitters called catecholamines and in particular one called adrenaline are released to help deal with a stressful event. They activate a portion of the brain that triggers the response you have to the event. It checks the memories stored to see if you had something similar happen and what response was given. Catecholamines then block activity that concerns short-term memory, restraint, rational thought, and concentration. This allows you to think and react quickly to the stressful event.

The circulation system and the lungs are also affected. You breathe heavier because the lungs are asking for more oxygen. Blood flow increases to get the muscles and body ready for a quick response, and the spleen sends out more red and white blood cells to ready the body for an attack. Heart rate and blood pressure increase rapidly.

The immune system reacts to an immediate threat or danger by sending out white cells that are infection fighters to the areas most likely to be affected by an immediate attack. Mainly they go the skin, bone marrow, and lymph nodes where the immune system books immunity.

Acute stress will cause the mouth and throat to dry up. Talking may become difficult and you may find it hard to swallow. The blood will go from the skin to other important tissues such as the heart and muscles. This causes your skin to feel cold and clammy. The scalp tightens and you will feel like your hair is standing straight up.

The digestive system shuts down temporarily when facing danger or acute stress. The body believes this work is not necessary during a crisis or physical exercise.

Once the threat or crisis is over, the body will revert to its normal roles. It allows the body to become normal and lets the stress hormones to return to normal. This is the relaxation response. When the stress hormones return to their normal state, the rest of the body's systems return to normal also.

Stress may cause overload of your body's stress reactors and may cause physical and psychological side effects. If that happens, you may not be able to deal with stress and that may lead to depression. Scientists believe that continuous release of stress hormones may change the normal levels of serotonin the body needs for feelings of happiness and emotional wellness. Stress reduces your ability to enjoy life, personal pleasures and accomplishments. Stress can harm relationships and cause deeper emotional problems.

Stress that produces negative physical side effects are stresses that pile up that cannot be controlled by the individual. Persistent stress such as posttraumatic stress syndrome and acute stress for those who have a serious illness also may cause physical health.
